community for people with voice problems started by The Lary Project
I have recently received some campaign postcards (for causes as diverse as human rights and education). They ask recipients to sign a postcard and then send to their MP/MSP/Councillor/Healthcare Professional or anyone else relevant. I wonder if we could do something similar?
My question: can you think of some specific aims we might like to achieve in a such campaign?
It is important they are specific.
Eg. recognise voice problems in the workplace
Better: Recognise the impact of voice problems in the work place by making them prescribed diseases under the Social Security Contributions and Benefits Act 1992
The second version is better because it tells the person what change we want to see and how the ultimate recipient can specifically help us do it.
Being ignorant here Terry but what benefit comes from being a 'prescribed disease' I confess that it does not sound inviting !
Sorry I have been so rubbish on getting on here and keeping things going. I have busy then ill then busy again then ill again... AH!!!!
A prescribed disease status means, as I understand, that you are entitled to certain compensation and benefits. I also understand that the employer has to be much more aware of diseases on the list and take more steps to prevent them them from occurring/help people where they do occur.
Ahhh, so this would help call centre workers, teachers etc. Makes sense now, just sounded odd. Hope you are ok and now back to good health
Sorry for the late response, however I feel I should contribute to this. Although I have other health issues aside from my psychogenic voice problem (migraines, chronic headache, depression etc.) I have been having issues recently with getting benefits. I am unable to work, due to both my lack of voice and my neurological issues. The headaches and related issues stop me from being able to concentrate and focus, however despite them being debilitating, this isn't seen as a 'disability'. My voice problem on the other hand, technically is classed as a 'disability', it is extremely difficult for those in charge to agree that I have one... now don't get me wrong, I don't want to be seen as disabled, having a prescribed disease etc. But I can't physically work at the moment. I can't finish my degree. I can't do a lot. It's not through not wanting too because I hate the life I am stuck in right now. It is because my health won't let me. Therefore, something like this would be a benefit to myself, and people like me. So if I can help at all, please let me know.
