Hi, I was hoping I might be able to get a bit of advice or suggestions. I get laryngitis at least once or twice a year. Each time I lose my voice completely for an average of four weeks. All I can manage is a whisper and that leaves my throat strained and me exhausted. I have a young child and a busy job that involves lots of voice work and I rely on public transport which are all so much harder with no voice.
It's happening with increasing frequency and I'm concerned about how bad it might get in the future. Maybe one time it won't come back? Years ago I had an endoscopy and was told I had muscle tension dysphonia in my vocal cords.
I've tried going to the GP but each time they say that my experience is really common and perfectly normal and doesn't mean anything's wrong so doesn't warrant a referral to ENT clinic.
So I was wondering, is this all really common? At what point does it stop being normal? at what point does a referral become worthwhile / advisable?
Thank you so much. Just knowing these pages exist and that other people understand the challenges makes me feel better.
